The ground just shifted under small business financing, and most owners haven't caught up yet.
Borrowing just got more expensive. The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate on September 16 — the first hike in three years — pushing variable-rate SBA loans and working capital lines higher within a billing cycle or two.
Banks are quietly getting pickier. Even as headline approval numbers look steady, line-of-credit approvals have dropped sharply and SBA underwriting has tightened, with fees reinstated that weren't there a year ago.
The SBA rulebook changed — again. Lending volume swung sharply this year as banks adjusted to new policy. The playbook an owner researched six months ago may already be out of date.
Taxes are now the #1 complaint among small business owners nationally — the highest reading since 2021 — ahead of labor costs and inflation.
None of this means stop growing. It means walk in knowing what's actually happening before you ask a bank, a lender, or a buyer for anything — and that's the entire point of this evening.
